South Yorkshire ICB Research & Innovation Forum: Cancer

Published On: January 30, 2026|

Yesterday, Digital Workforce Services Plc (e18) UK&I Healthcare MD, Louise Wall, joined leading healthcare innovators at the NHS South Yorkshire ICB, South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Cancer Alliance and Health Innovation Yorkshire & Humber Network Research & Innovation Forum to discuss the real-world impact of Robotic Process Automation (RPA) in NHS cancer services.

The forum brought together leading voices across academia, NHS leadership, and digital innovation to explore the intersection of AI, automation, and cancer care transformation. Chaired by David Crichton(Chief Medical Officer, NHS South Yorkshire ICB), the day featured keynotes from Professor Penny Ottewell (Cancer Research Director, University of Sheffield), followed by expert sessions on AI and machine learning concepts fromDr Bilal Tahir (University of Sheffield), clinical validation from Dr Christopher Johns (Consultant Radiologist, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals), and digital innovation presentations from Haris Shuaib (CEO, Newton’s Tree), and James Clark (Director of Business Development, Careology). The afternoon explored ethical considerations in AI with Marjory Da-Costa (Digital Health Hub, Sheffield Hallam), followed by breakout sessions on clinical delivery, administrative processes, and patient-driven care, culminating in a panel discussion.

While the healthcare sector is rightly excited about AI’s potential, there’s understandable caution around governance, regulation, and the unknowns that come with emerging technology.

That’s precisely why RPA is such a game-changer right now!

RPA is proven. It’s safe. It’s been working reliably for years.
Unlike AI, RPA operates on clear, rule-based logic—automating repetitive, structured tasks with full auditability and zero ambiguity.

For South Yorkshire’s cancer services, the opportunity is significant. The expertise is here. The processes are proven. The community is ready to support rapid adoption.

Across c70 NHS customers, Digital Workforce Services Plc and e18 Innovation have created a thriving community of shared learning and collaboration. Our library of 400+ proven automation processes means trusts don’t start from scratch—they benefit from years of combined expertise and real-world evidence.
