Under enormous pressure due a combination of rising demand, the need to close the outcomes gap with Europe, and the changing needs of the cancer population, cancer services in the NHS are currently facing significant challenges in meeting targets.[1] The target that 85% of patients should start treatment within 62 days of an urgent cancer referral has not been hit since 2015, and the UK is not on track to hit its long-term goal to see 75% of cancers diagnosed at stages 1 or 2 by 2028.[2]

Cancer remains a significant healthcare challenge in West Yorkshire and Harrogate, with 250 people being diagnosed with cancer every week, and 115 individuals losing their lives to this condition. Despite some progress, cancer outcomes in disadvantaged communities continue to lag, exacerbated by the ongoing impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.
